What?! Compliance is fun?! Well in full “disclosure” it can be fun. I’m sure compliance hasn’t felt like much fun for credit unions in 2013; especially those that are heavily involved in mortgage lending.
At PolicyWorks we take compliance very seriously, but that doesn’t mean we don’t enjoy what we do. In fact, I have heard Andrea Stritzke refer to herself as the “Fun Attorney” on more than one occasion. We try to interject a little bit of humor into of our presentations, and we enjoy our interaction with the credit unions we assist.
Recently the topic of making compliance fun came up in a staff meeting. One of our new teammates mentioned that we are a fun group, which was not what she envisioned for a group of compliance nerds like us. Maybe she didn’t use the word “nerds” but we’ll admit it anyway. We discussed the fact that this may be something we should embrace as a strength of our organization. We talked about ways to encourage fun in our work, and one idea was to include a joke in our newsletter. For example: Did you hear about the Compliance Officer who wore two jackets when she painted the house? The instructions on the can said: “Put on two coats.”
While “researching” compliance jokes I came across a June 2011 article from the Wall Street Journal. The article discusses a Manhattan comedy club’s competition to find the nation’s funniest compliance professional. My first thought was “No way. This is great,” and my second thought was “I wish I would have known in time to enter!”
If your credit union has fun with compliance, send me a message and let me know how you have used this as an asset to your institution. Or, if you have a compliance related joke, I’d love to hear it. Maybe we’ll include it in an upcoming newsletter.
